Psychic Force manual backstory
A psychiccer is someone who can use mysterious supernatural powers, the kind that were formerly unimaginable to humanity.
But, having those powers does not guarantee happiness.
Psychiccers were swallowed up by the greed of nations....
In order to save the psyhiccers buried in darkness, and to create a psychic utopia, one man stood up and fought. His name was Keith.
But at some point his dreams of "a world for psychiccers" changed into "a world ruled by psychiccers"...
Psychic Force Character Profiles
Burn
Burn has been on a journey to find his best friend, Keith, ever since Keith disappeared three years ago. At last, he found the clues that led him to Keith again. But Keith was no longer the good friend Burn remembered, and asked him for help in bringing the psychiccer utopia into reality.
However, once Burn caught a glimpse of the true intentions hidden behind those words, he took Emilio and Wendy and bailed on NOA. Still, he was unable to just forget about Keith. In order to correct Keith's mistaken methods, he returned alone to NOA.
Emilio
From his childhood, Emilio's psychic powers caused people to reject him and were the source of all his problems. But as long as his beloved mother was on his side, he was happy enough.
But one day, his mother suddenly stabbed him with a knife. Through his disbelief, Emilio could see from her eyes that she was serious. Ultimately, even his mother saw him as a burden. In that moment, when Emilio lost everything he could believe in, he unconsciously released the power hidden inside of him. By the time he came back to himself, there was nothing left of the city, not even a single tree. After that he spent many long years confined in a research laboratory, until Keith rescued him and brought him to NOA.
Wendy
Wendy had a sister: a super-brainy genius who was researching psychic powers. That sister left home a year ago in order to do research in a foreign country, but recently...all her letters have stopped. Wendy didn't feel anything had happened, so she decided to leave and find her sister all on her own.
On that day, Wendy heard Keith's telepathic broadcast. Remembering that both she and her sister had mysterious psychic powers, Wendy figured that maybe, her sister had also heard the telepathic message. And so she hurried off to find out where the message had come from.
Sonia
A bioroid installed with psychic amplifiers, developed in Wong's private research laboratory. Wendy's sister, Chris, was involved in the project.
But during development, an incident occurred. Though the cause was unknown, the results were that Chris's mind was absorbed into Sonia's artificial mind, and in the process, all her previous memories were lost. And because of the instability the artificial psychic powers created inside her, she must be injected with a tranquilizer on a strict schedule or she'll go out of control.
Brad
For awhile now, Brad has been suffering blackouts, gaps in his memory where there is nothing. More than that, he always wakes up covered in blood after a blackout. Right when he was getting really scared of the blackouts, Brad learned the truth. Right in front of his eyes, on the side of a road, in the middle of the night, he saw a bloodstained corpse. And worse still, he was covered in blood - that didn't seem to be his. He felt an unreasonable rush of pleasure. And so he began to fear himself.
While "I have to kill myself" was endlessly swirling around in his head and he was praying for some help, from anywhere, Keith's telepathic broadcast burst into his head. This was the help he had been hoping for. So thinking, he set out for NOA.
Wong
Though Wong was born as the son of the president of a major Hong Kong trading firm, his mother's affair caused his relatives to torment him through his childhood. But between his natural intelligence and psychic powers, he forced his relatives to resign and took over the company before any of them realised what was going on.
However, his twisted ambition could not be satisfied by that alone.
To grasp the entire world is his ultimate objective. And so, when he first heard Keith's telepathic broadcast, he thought: "it would be a waste not to use this". NOA quickly became part of his conspiracy.
Gates
He became aware of NOA's existence while enlisted in the US Army. The brass, fearing that NOA would become a major threat, stood up a new anti-psychiccer unit. He was that unit's first anti-psychiccer cyborg, a position he himself had volunteered for. The reason? Because just a short time ago, his wife and child were killed by a psychiccer.
Genma
A priest from Kagekouya who is also a tireless demon hunter.
Even before he left the temple, he'd started having a vague feeling of evil beginning to move. He could feel the merest tip of that great evil that he could see wished for humanity's destruction, and so in order to destroy it down to the root, he set off alone for NOA.
He's not a psychiccer, but he has many techniques using ofuda that give him the power to fight with psychiccers on equal footing.
Keith
Three years ago, while on an exchange trip to America, Keith was kidnapped and held in a research facility on an Air Force base. There, he joined with his fellow samples and planned a violent insurrection to escape. But the facility fought back, and all of Keith's comrades died. Keith alone escaped.
Afterwards, Keith used his telepathy to broadcast a plea across the world for the scattered psychiccers of every country to join him. This was the beginning of the psychiccer organization NOA. For the future of psychiccers... NOA walks the path of world domination.

In this world, there are people called "psychiccers" who have superpowers. National governments, hoping they could be used to replace nuclear weapons, made a policy of capturing them and subjecting them to inhumane experiments. Many psychiccers lived and died in darkness.
In order to save his vanishing brethren, in order to create a peaceful utopia, a lone psychiccer named Keith created the organization "NOA" to fight against the humans. But soon his ideals began to shift, and the psychiccer utopia turned into psychiccer domination.
This attracted the attention of Keith's best friend, Burn. Opposed to NOA's method of indiscriminate destruction, Burn challenged Keith to a fight. Each staking their respective visions on the outcome, Keith and Burn began a fight to the death. But that fight ended when NOA's underground base exploded, thanks to the treachery of NOA member Wong. Keith, Burn, and all of the members of NOA vanished behind the curtain of fire...
The few survivors were captured by the army under Wong's guidance, and thrown into the newly-established "psychiccer unit". And so, without the guiding light of Keith, psychiccers once again became the lost children of a dark age...
Now, 2012 AD.
Neo NOA, rising once again with word of Keith's revival. The army psychiccer unit, led by Wong. And other psychiccers, all carrying their own hopes and dreams. Now, an endless battle begins between them....

Might
Personality: A person of few words who doesn't know how to connect with others. But after meeting Patty, he's slowly beginning to act more like a normal boy.
He has no doubts about his role as a psychiccer hunter, but his lack of memories is starting to concern him. The seeds of doubt are being planted...

Might, a boy who goes after psychiccers like a serial killer*. He goes after psychiccers, and only psychiccers, regardless if they're in the army or NOA. That mission is his sole reason for existing.
He has no real memories of his past, only that his name is Might and that he was saved by Patty after collapsing from a major wound.
Can the mysterious power within Patty's voice calm Might's confused heart?
Patty's singing awakens warm feelings within Might, but he remains a psychiccer hunter. His duty is still to take her life...
*T/N: The word in Japanese is "tsujigiri", which refers to when samurai would get a new sword or a new technique and try it out on passers-by. They would usually wait at crossroads at night, thus the literal reading of "crossroads-cutting/killing". We don't really have a good name for this in English, and I went with "serial killer" as the closest equivalent. The manual uses "a man possessed", which to me has the connotation of being out of control, which isn't exactly the case for Might.
Patty
Personality: A gentle, cheerful, and openhearted girl, but ever since she lost her mother it's like there's been a limiter put on her bright personality. Though she hates fighting, she's never cursed her power.

Her mother had a mysterious power in her voice. Her lullaby could stop a child crying, and her sympathetic words could restore the sick to health. Patty inherited the same power, and when her mother disappeared she went to look for her. Patty hopes that her power "can be used to help people, not to harm them", but the army is aiming for her and Neo NOA is deeply curious. After starting her journey, the psychiccer hunter, Might, appeared before her. Though they're complete opposites, a strange friendship has been born between them.
Being connected by this odd bond, the two decide to travel together. And when Patty learned her mother was already dead - killed - she decided to stand on the battlefield herself to discover the truth.
Wendy
Personality: Fundamentally cheerful and carefree, but she's calmed down a lot compared to before.
To expand on that a little, that stubborn and impulsive personality she used to have will probably never come back.

Was the woman named Sonia who vanished in the flames of destruction really her older sister Chris?
In order to answer that question, as well as search for Burn and Emilio, Wendy threw herself into dangerous battles alone.
Standing in her way are not only Neo NOA's pursuers, but also the psychiccer hunter, Might. More than that, Emilio has appeared before her, now the assassin of the army's psychiccer unit.
Can Wendy bring Emilio back to his old self? And what will grow from the feelings for Burn quietly budding inside her heart?
Genshin
Personality: A tiny old man with a quiet personality. His skills as a magician are top notch.

Genshin, the magician of Kagekouya. He's a senior member of the same sect that produced Genma, who once went on a world-traveling pilgrimage to exterminate the psychiccers he saw as evil.
When Genshin returned home to the temple after finishing a routine exorcism, what greeted him was a terrible scene: Kagekouya reduced to rubble.
"The one who destroyed Kagekouya...it was a psychiccer..."
Those were the last words of one of Genshin's fellow disciples. With only that small clue to guide him, Genshin departed the ruined temple on a journey of revenge for his comrades.
Was the psychiccer who destroyed Kagekouya from Neo NOA?
Or possibly was it the work of one of the army's psychiccer unit?
Carlo
Personality: Put simply, quiet and peaceful. He doesn't look like the kind of guy who likes to fight, but when push comes to shove he's able to look at things calmly, make a decision, and execute that decision quickly. You could say he's the type that's scariest when angered.

Thanks to the army psychiccer unit led by Wong, other psychiccers were forced into fleeing with no place to go.
Years ago, Carlo was imprisoned in a psychiccer research facility, before both he and his sister, Regina were saved by Keith. Having found hope in NOA before, now Carlo set himself up as a spokesman for Keith and began to gather his lost comrades once again, all for the sake of the psychiccer utopia.
Carlo, with his sharp mind and rare psychic power, was able to quickly execute a number of logical plans and strategies.
But Neo NOA soon faced another crisis: their comrade Gudeath sold the majority of their members to Wong. The remaining few began to suspect each other, and the whole enterprise quickly began to dissolve.
And the leader of Neo NOA, Keith, who only shows himself to Carlo...is that the real Keith? Or did Keith replace himself with some sort of body double?
Caught on the horns of a dilemma, Carlo is forced to make a final decision.
Regina
Personality: Strong-willed and quick to anger, she also harbors an abnormal amount of admiration for her older brother, Carlo. She frequently acts on his behalf, sometimes going overboard.

Neo NOA's warrior Regina, a woman who risks her life to build a utopia. But her real reason for fighting is her brother; for whom she bears affection and admiration. Her feelings for Carlo drive her toward the battlefield.
She supported Carlo after the destruction of NOA as he continued to gather comrades while being chased by the army psychiccers.
At last, Neo NOA was born after two years of work. But thanks to the betrayal of Gudeath, it was immediately thrown into a crisis that could cost them everything.
Unable to sit by and watch her brother suffer, Regina decided to take care of Wong herself. And so she set off for the headquarters of the army psychiccer unit alone, heedless of any danger.
Gates
Personality: His human feelings have been completely eliminated, leaving only a doll that carries out missions for NOA.

The army's anti-psychiccer cyborg, Gates. His grudge against Keith for killing his wife and daughter let him retain his human spirit despite cyborgization.
Because his emotions were unable to be separated from the computer*, Gates suffered a terminal rejection of his mechanical body while on-route to the battle with NOA. Afterwards, he was stored in the old NOA's headquarters.
After establishing Neo NOA, Carlo picked Gates' body up out of storage and remade him as an anti-army cyborg.
Gates, now called Alpha, was reborn as NOA's newest weapon, stripped of all his memories and even his name.
*T/N: I honestly couldn't parse this sentence completely, but I think the idea is that his human feelings caused a rejection of his cyborg body.
It's interesting that PF1 was never specific about who killed Tina and Cheryl and generally points it away from Keith, but 2012 just has Keith do it personally.
Emilio
Personality: Cruel and warlike, with not a trace of humanity left. Emilio now seems to enjoy wielding and fighting with his power. The old Emilio, who hated and blamed himself, who feared his terrible power, seems to have vanished completely. Could two years really change the nature of a person so much?

Emilio ran into NOA headquarters along with Burn and Wendy, but when he was enveloped in the underground stronghold's explosion, the army intervened. Captured, Emilio was shut up in a psychic research laboratory.
At that time, when Emilio was destined to only be a lab rat, an unexpected person extended a helping hand. Richard Wong. Why was Wong in the army, an organization that was an enemy to psychiccers? For Emilio's exhausted heart, already fragile as glass, there was no room for such doubts and questions.
Now two years have passed. Emilio is a part of the army psychiccer unit that Wong commands. He enjoys destruction, and rejoices in his own strength. There's no longer a hint of the previous sadness remaining in his eyes.
In the midst of this, the power he hated and feared is slowly and gradually beginning to awaken.
Gudeath
Personality: Though he looks wild and rugged, he's actually very calculating. He's got a wealth of secret information for a variety of fields, all of it very detailed.

Has absolutely no sense of cooperation. Since he only believes in himself, he hates working with other people. He looks down on Setsuna as a failed experiment.
The day his powers awakened was the happiest day of his life, because the only person he ever believed in was himself.
The discriminated becomes the discriminator. To betray and sell his comrades to the army after joining Neo NOA was a natural choice.
He only thinks of himself, and proceeds according to his own whims. Gudeath cares nothing for Carlo's utopia or Wong's ruthless ambition. For him, fighting is nothing but a game.
Setsuna
Personality: He looks like the cool, collected type, but actually he's a touchy asshole who will fight at the slightest provocation. Since he became an artificial psychiccer, his confidence and pride are untouchable; and because he hates to lose, he's constantly checking himself against Gudeath in a completely one-sided rivalry.

But nothing changed for him. Every day was a humiliation, the same as ever. To add insult to injury, there was no way the kind of man he was could ever become an officer. Was he just going to be another disposable pawn forever? That was when he happened to hear about Wong's artificial psychiccer project. He immediately ran up and volunteered to be made a test subject.
An unknown and threatening power, obtained in exchange for his own flesh and blood. Being the strongest gave him the pride and untouchable self-confidence he had always wanted.* Because he was once human, he sees all psychiccers as rivals, to the point of madness. The flames of that madness burn higher and higher, and will soon reach his comrade Gudeath and his creator, Wong.

This seems to be continuing the whole "artificial psychic powers drive you crazy" thing Sonia secretly had in PF1, but without actually saying it.
Wong
Personality: Calm and collected, he's never without a pleasant smile. But underneath that charming mask lies a cold and ruthless reality, a man who will do whatever it takes to achieve his desires.

After the development of the combat bioroid Sonia was completed, Wong set his sights on his next goal: "The Artificial Psychiccer Project" - transforming a human into a psychiccer.
Knowing he'd never be able to achieve his ambitions while working with Keith, who hated human experimentation, Wong made a deal with the army. In return for handing over his comrades in NOA, Wong would gain a new partner.
So it was arranged that the moment Wong pressed the button that destroyed NOA headquarters, he would become the commander of the army psycchicer unit.
But for Wong, this is simply the beginning of a new game.
Keith
Personality: Quiet and cool, but has deep consideration and kindness for his comrades.
However, towards humans he's very cold. He has no mercy for those who ally themselves with humans, even if they are his fellow psychiccers.

Burn
Personality: A hot-blooded man with a one-track mind. He still worries about his best friend Keith, even though they've become enemies. He was caught in the explosion and lost consciousness when NOA's headquarters was destroyed two years ago.

Burn, who was caught in the explosion of NOA's headquarters at the height of his battle with Keith, automatically put up a barrier to protect Keith, but was himself wrapped up in the maelstrom of flame.
Keith, who regained consciousness first, found Burn collapsed in the rubble. But no matter what, Burn's eyes wouldn't open.
After that, Burn continued to sleep deep underneath NOA headquarters.
And then, in 2012, in order to settle things with "him"....

We don't really have a good name for this in English, and I went with "serial killer" as the closest equivalent. The manual uses "a man possessed", which to me has the connotation of being out of control, which isn't exactly the case for Might.
Patty
Personality: A gentle, cheerful, and openhearted girl, but ever since she lost her mother it's like there's been a limiter put on her bright personality. Though she hates fighting, she's never cursed her power.

Patty hopes that her power "can be used to help people, not to harm them", but the army is aiming for her and Neo NOA is deeply curious. After starting her journey, the psychiccer hunter, Might, appeared before her. Though they're complete opposites, a strange friendship has been born between them.
Being connected by this odd bond, the two decide to travel together. And when Patty learned her mother was already dead - killed - she decided to stand on the battlefield herself to discover the truth.
Wendy
Personality: Fundamentally cheerful and carefree, but she's calmed down a lot compared to before.
To expand on that a little, that stubborn and impulsive personality she used to have will probably never come back.

Personality: A tiny old man with a quiet personality. His skills as a magician are top notch.

Carlo
Personality: Put simply, quiet and peaceful. He doesn't look like the kind of guy who likes to fight, but when push comes to shove he's able to look at things calmly, make a decision, and execute that decision quickly. You could say he's the type that's scariest when angered.

Thanks to the army psychiccer unit led by Wong, other psychiccers were forced into fleeing with no place to go.
Years ago, Carlo was imprisoned in a psychiccer research facility, before both he and his sister, Regina were saved by Keith. Having found hope in NOA before, now Carlo set himself up as a spokesman for Keith and began to gather his lost comrades once again, all for the sake of the psychiccer utopia.
Carlo, with his sharp mind and rare psychic power, was able to quickly execute a number of logical plans and strategies.
But Neo NOA soon faced another crisis: their comrade Gudeath sold the majority of their members to Wong. The remaining few began to suspect each other, and the whole enterprise quickly began to dissolve.
And the leader of Neo NOA, Keith, who only shows himself to Carlo...is that the real Keith? Or did Keith replace himself with some sort of body double?
Caught on the horns of a dilemma, Carlo is forced to make a final decision.
Regina
Personality: Strong-willed and quick to anger, she also harbors an abnormal amount of admiration for her older brother, Carlo. She frequently acts on his behalf, sometimes going overboard.

Unable to sit by and watch her brother suffer, Regina decided to take care of Wong herself. And so she set off for the headquarters of the army psychiccer unit alone, heedless of any danger.
Gates
Personality: His human feelings have been completely eliminated, leaving only a doll that carries out missions for NOA.

The army's anti-psychiccer cyborg, Gates. His grudge against Keith for killing his wife and daughter let him retain his human spirit despite cyborgization.
Because his emotions were unable to be separated from the computer*, Gates suffered a terminal rejection of his mechanical body while on-route to the battle with NOA. Afterwards, he was stored in the old NOA's headquarters.
After establishing Neo NOA, Carlo picked Gates' body up out of storage and remade him as an anti-army cyborg.
Gates, now called Alpha, was reborn as NOA's newest weapon, stripped of all his memories and even his name.
*T/N: I honestly couldn't parse this sentence completely, but I think the idea is that his human feelings caused a rejection of his cyborg body.
It's interesting that PF1 was never specific about who killed Tina and Cheryl and generally points it away from Keith, but 2012 just has Keith do it personally.
Emilio
Personality: Cruel and warlike, with not a trace of humanity left. Emilio now seems to enjoy wielding and fighting with his power. The old Emilio, who hated and blamed himself, who feared his terrible power, seems to have vanished completely. Could two years really change the nature of a person so much?

Emilio ran into NOA headquarters along with Burn and Wendy, but when he was enveloped in the underground stronghold's explosion, the army intervened. Captured, Emilio was shut up in a psychic research laboratory.

Personality: Though he looks wild and rugged, he's actually very calculating. He's got a wealth of secret information for a variety of fields, all of it very detailed.

Has absolutely no sense of cooperation. Since he only believes in himself, he hates working with other people. He looks down on Setsuna as a failed experiment.
The day his powers awakened was the happiest day of his life, because the only person he ever believed in was himself.
The discriminated becomes the discriminator. To betray and sell his comrades to the army after joining Neo NOA was a natural choice.
He only thinks of himself, and proceeds according to his own whims. Gudeath cares nothing for Carlo's utopia or Wong's ruthless ambition. For him, fighting is nothing but a game.
Setsuna
Personality: He looks like the cool, collected type, but actually he's a touchy asshole who will fight at the slightest provocation. Since he became an artificial psychiccer, his confidence and pride are untouchable; and because he hates to lose, he's constantly checking himself against Gudeath in a completely one-sided rivalry.

Personality: Calm and collected, he's never without a pleasant smile. But underneath that charming mask lies a cold and ruthless reality, a man who will do whatever it takes to achieve his desires.

Personality: Quiet and cool, but has deep consideration and kindness for his comrades.
However, towards humans he's very cold. He has no mercy for those who ally themselves with humans, even if they are his fellow psychiccers.

Personality: A hot-blooded man with a one-track mind. He still worries about his best friend Keith, even though they've become enemies. He was caught in the explosion and lost consciousness when NOA's headquarters was destroyed two years ago.

Burn, who was caught in the explosion of NOA's headquarters at the height of his battle with Keith, automatically put up a barrier to protect Keith, but was himself wrapped up in the maelstrom of flame.

After that, Burn continued to sleep deep underneath NOA headquarters.
